Is there any 'home remedy' against mold growth on furniture?

I have a holiday home in the hills. Every 3 months or so when we went in to stay there are always blackish (greyish) patches on vertical surfaces of the furniture.
I am aware that ventilation helps but I could not open my windows when I leave the home.

  1. Bleach will kill mold. What I would try is to dilute bleach in water, but very diluted.

Then test this solution on an area no one can see, maybe the back of the furniture. If this test does not stain your furniture, then apply the solution to where the mold grows.

See the problem is, if you don’t KILL the mold, it will keep coming back. Sure, you ventilate the room a little bit, and it appears to go away, but it is still there, and it will grow when the proper condition arise.

I hope this helps, but be careful, because bleach COULD stain, so try at your own risk. But if it was me, I would not want mold where I sit. It is very unhealthy.

  2. dehumidify. an air conditioner, even running at 80 degrees will dehumidify and help guard against this. opening the windows won’t… in fact it may make it worse..

  3. Use clorox an water mixed about 2 teaspoons of clorox to a small spray bottle.Mist your furniture with it before you leave lightly. This should prevent any mold growth while your gone. When you return I would vacumn the furniture to remove any mold particles that mat re-grow.

Get a couple of dehumidifiers depending on the size of the house. Remove the pans and set one in the bath tub and one over the kitchen sink. That way you don’t have to worry about the pans filling up and shuting off the units.

  5. Go to an RV supply store and get some "ridzair" it is a chemical that removes moisture from the air without using power. Many people us it in their RV’s in the off season for the same purpose.
